I’m Engaged Now What Do We Do?

You may have been mentally prepared for this moment for some time, but now you’re engaged, and that ring is on your finger, what do you actually do?!

First off, congrats. This is truly a special time, and a moment that should be cherished. But in all the shared excitement of dreaming about what’s to come, it can be hard to actually know what to do. I mean, you’ve seen it in movies enough times, you should know exactly what to do! But for most of us, we actually don’t, and really, we’re simply saying to ourselves ‘I’m engaged, now what’. What happens now? What am I supposed to do? What would Kendall do?

Today, we’re going to share some fun, simple, and not so simple things we would recommend you do once that ring slips onto your finger. And let’s be clear before we begin, these are not hard and fast rules. Every couple is different, and if you’re not able to tick off these tasks, it doesn’t mean you’re going down the wrong path. You’re just taking your own journey.

I’m Engaged, Now What?

Take a Moment, Together

We know we said these suggestions don’t have to be followed by everyone, but this one, for us, is a must. You’ll read on other ‘I’m Engaged, Now What’ posts that the first thing you should do after saying yes, is get a manicure! But we believe those first few moments, minutes and hours after they popped the question should be spent together, soaking it in. Being excited together, wondering what your near and far future will be like, having a well-earned drink together! Because from here on out, as soon as you tell people your news, it becomes everyone’s celebration. So, just for a moment, enjoy this private excitement together.

Tell Your Nearest & Dearest You Are Engaged

Way before you start browsing #ImEngaged for ring selfie inspiration, you should inform your family & friends of your big announcement. Because there needs to be some kind of hierarchy! It’s unlikely your Mom, or your best friend would be too pleased if the first they heard out about your engagement, was via someone liking it on Facebook! So call them up individually, parents, siblings (that you like), close family members (that you like), and those friends who are practically family. Give these VIPs a call, or even pop round to their house, and make them feel as special as you know they are.

Share the News with the World

Now’s the time to get that manicure! Because if you’re a social media user, and you want to share the news with your wider network of friends/family/admirers. Don’t do it with chipped nails! Now, what we would say is, I’m engaged shots on Instagram do look best when they’re as natural as possible. So try to capture the moment together on the same day, while you’re still buzzing.

We have a list of creative suggestions for announcing your engagement, if you need some inspiration!

Get Your Ring Re-sized & Insured

If your partner managed to get a ring made for you that fits perfectly, wow, they’re a keeper! This is not always the case however, and in fact, normally an engagement ring needs to be re-sized in order for it to fit perfectly. Be sure to pair this little job, with actually getting that rock insured. Because all the time you’re walking around with a ring that’s too big for your dainty little digits, you’re risking it falling off, and into the gutter. Get both of these responsible jobs done ASAP.

Gather the Troops for a Pre-Engagement Party

There is a lot of planning coming up on the horizon, and countless decisions will have to be made. So, before you need to start all of that, go crazy, go wild and celebrate with your very closest friends and family. Nothing fancy, just a few drinks, and some super, possibly drunken informal toasts. For us, this is another, ‘I’m Engaged, Now What’ must!

Think About Your Wedding Date

The date of your wedding effects everything, and so it needs careful, logical consideration. The best venues, and vendors get snapped up quickly for bookings at popular times to get married. So if you want something in particular on your big day, and you’re not willing to wait a couple of years to get it, you need to act fast. And, unless you’re eloping, you’ll want your loved ones to be at your wedding, so consider their timetable too. Talk to both families, and your close friends, and float the provisional date/s you’re considering. That way, hopefully, you won’t get any disappointment when you start sending out the wedding invitations.

Start Getting Some Wedding Inspiration Together

Whether you’ve stuck a date in the diary, or simply said, ‘we’ll tie the knot in a couple of Summers from now’, it’s good to start thinking about how your big day could look. What color theme are you most drawn to? What kind of venue would you like? Talk these things through together, and remember that unless your timeline is tight, there’s no need to pin your colors to the mast yet. This is the fun bit! So, create those Pinterest boards, discover once-unknown corners of Etsy, and start shoving Brides magazine in your partners’ face at any opportunity!
