How to make your own Wedding Countdown Sign

If you're feeling crafty but you don't know where to start with wedding prep, then making yourself a wedding countdown sign is a great way to get things moving. If you're newly engaged make it for yourself, or treat a bride or groom to be that you know.

If you enjoy doing it, you could also make ones for baby due dates, holiday countdowns, christmas excitement... anything that you have to wait for basically!

WHAT YOU NEED:

There are various ways to do this so the supplies can vary. Take a look at the info below to decide which way is the best for you.

- BLANK SIGN

I got my perspex sign from Acrylic Craft in the UK, however if you live elsewhere, google perspex supplier and your area and you should be able to find someone who supplies acrylic shapes nearby.
Or, you could use an off cut of wood from your nearest timber yard/hardware store, some thick cardstock, a slate heart... really you can apply to anything that is strong enough to stand up on its own and is smooth and flat.

- Chalkboard vinyl or Chalkboard paint

In my video I used chalkboard vinyl that I cut on my Cricut machine, however you can also buy packs of chalkboard jar stickers on Amazon, or buy chalkboard paint and use a stencil to paint your shape.

- Vinyl wording (+transfer tape) or a paint pen

Again, I used my Cricut to cut the wording out on Gold Vinyl as well as some transfer tape, however you can also use a sharpie or a posca paint pen

- Some Chalk or a Chalk Pen

I used a chalk pen in my video but you can just as easily use normal chalk.

STEP ONE:

First you need to apply your chalk sticker or chalk paint. Just try and make sure your sticker is lined up as straight as possible, or if you're using chalk paint, make a template first so that its neat.

STEP TWO:

The words! You can either use a paint pen and write on the wording yourself if you have neat handwriting or can letter, or you can use vinyl letters like I have in my video.

If you're using vinyl, you need to make sure your design is weeded so that only the letters that you need are left. Don't forget to get rid of the middles of the letters, and don't accidentally get rid of the i dots.

Then place transfer paper over the top of the wording and smooth it down using a store card or a vinyl applicator.

Once the writing is smoothed down and there are no bubbles, peel the white backing paper off, making sure the letters are stuck to the transfer paper as you go (the slower the better for this bit!). You can then place your transfer paper and words on to the sign where you want it to go.

If you want to make sure it is completely straight and you're using perspex too, put some square paper lined directly underneath and use that as a guide. If you're using something else, try using a laser spirit measure or use a ruler/tape measure to measure it out and use masking tape as a guide to where you want to put it.

Use the store card/vinyl applicator again to press down on the letters and make sure they're fully stuck to the sign. Once that's done, you can peel the transfer paper off (again, go slow), being sure not to bring any of the letters with you.

And that's it done!

Just use your chalk pen to add the days and then wipe off and repeat each day!

If your sign has holes in it, add some string or ribbon and tie it up or perch it somerwhere for all to see.

If you don't want to make your own sign, then there are some amazing ones to buy on Etsy, these ones below are our favorites…

Or if you still want to make one, but don't have the time for the above, then you can also use a framed printable and dry wipe marker to count down to the big day like this one below from jenthousandwords.com (tutorial here)
