Although not everyone opts to have a save the date, they are a great way to let your guests know the date of your big day, and are a big help if they will be travelling from out of town or if they need to book in some holiday time at work!

If you're on a budget or just like to get a bit crafty, then I've made a list of 10 of the best and most creative DIY ways to announce your wedding date.

1. Mini pencils & tags

This is so cute! All you need are some mini pencils, string and some luggage tags and you're good to go. If you can, make a design and then print it on the tags to save time. You can also get little heart punches from most craft stores or patterned washi tape if you want to add another design element.

If you want to buy them pre-made then there are lots available on Etsy like these ones from GREENFOXYTags below.

2. Fingerprints

Either make each save the date card with an individual print if you have lots of time, and you're prepared to get a bit messy, or scan the original one in and print the rest out.

This is something completely individual to you and is a plain and simple way to add a bit of colour to your cards.

3. With a knot

A super easy but effective DIY project is making your own cards with string that ties when the guest opens it up. This works especially well if you're planning a quite rustic wedding and adds something a bit more special to what might have been an ordinary and very plain card.

4. A picture of the date

Another very easy way to let everyone know the date, is to take a photo of it on some kind of prop. You can get creative... use balloons, pumpkins, make your own sign, or write it on your shoes like the below.

If you want to recreate the below with your soles but don't want to ruin your shoes, Love Life Lettering have some Shoe Stickers available on their Etsy page here which can be personalised with your date on!

5. A picture of you both

Polaroids look amazing, but they are expensive so you could just get a photo printed with a white border and write on that if you're looking to cut costs.

Use a photo from your engagement, or just one of your favourites from your time together.

6. A picture of a pet/child

If you have a mini me in your life then what cuter way to make an announcement than with a picture of them. Make them a little sign to hold with your date on and send it round to all of your friends and family and then cue the 'awww's.

7. Buy a custom stamp

If you're strapped for time, an easy and cheap way to make your own DIY save the dates is to get yourself a custom stamp and buy some luggage tags or plain cards.

Hello World Stamps on Etsy have some adorable designs, and custom make them with your names and date on so all you have to do is get some ink, stamp and send!

8. A mini calendar

This one is so easy to do! All you need to do is print out a mini calendar for the year, circle your date and add your names! You can of course add lots of other little details to suit your wedding theme however.

To make the below, somethingturquoise.com has a really easy tutorial here.

This is another really easy and cheap idea that requires some guest interaction and makes an otherwise plain card more fun.

10. Send an email or e-vite

If you want to keep things totally simple, or you're planning something a bit more elaborate for your invitations, then perhaps just stick with an email or e-vite. Design it yourself and perhaps add some pictures from your engagement to make it a bit more inviting, or use a service like Paperless Post who offer pre-designed cards.
