For our wedding we gave all of our guests a little bottle of maple syrup with personalised labels on them...

Here is a quick tutorial if you want to make your own DIY labels for any kind of Wedding favour or DIY decor:

What you will need:

  • Sticker paper (Cricut has own brand sticker paper but it was really expensive so I just bought a generic kind from Amazon)

  • I have used a Cricut machine for this tutorial, but you can also use a Silhouette or just scissors if you use a more basic shape

  • Home Printer

  • Design software - I use Photoshop but if you don't have that, get a free trial from PicMonkey which is just as easy to use

If you want to make your own maple syrup favours like us, then you will also need

  • Maple Syrup (We bought two massive bottles from Costco)

  • Wholesale batch of small bottles (There is loads of choice on Amazon)

  • Small Funnel

Step One:

Decide on the basic shape of your sticker and either make an outline using the shapes tool on your design software, or find a shape online using a google image search. It needs to be a complete shape with no gaps anywhere so that the Cricut will be able to cut it out properly.

You could use a heart, a shell shape for a beach wedding, a mickey mouse head for a disney wedding favour... the list is endless. You can get creative and truly tailor it to your wedding theme.

Step Two:

What wording do you want to include? I knew I wanted to include our initials and the date of our party, but we had limited space for anything else so I just added ‘A sweet treat from’ as well as a heart in the leaves of the maple leaf.

Play around with what will fit and choose a nice script type font, but make sure it is still easily readable when small.

If you need a good font then check out my list of where to find them here: Free Wedding Fonts

Step Three:

Once you’re happy with your design you need to multiply it as many times as possible on the size of sticker paper that you will be printing on. Cricut can't cut a printed image any larger than 9.25 x 6.75 inches so don't make your overall surface any bigger than that.

To do this on photoshop, I selected all of the layers, right clicked and made them into a smart object. I then duplicated the layer twice, and then duplicated the 3 designs again until I filled the space.

Save the design as a PNG file if you're using it on cricut or just as a PDF if you're cutting it.

Step Four (for Cricut users):

If you're using a cricut, load up your Cricut design space and open a new project. Use upload to add your image and select the appropriate image type.

I just selected simple on the image type screen as my design is black and white, but you may want to choose moderately complex if you have a few different colours on your design.

When you get to the select & erase screen, you need to get rid of the background so you are just left with the stickers.

Then on the next stage, it is vital that you click 'Save as print then cut image'

Click save and then insert image into your new project.

Make sure you have calibrated your Cricut design space for printing first...

Once that is done and you're happy with the accuracy of your calibration, you're ready to click 'make it'.

It will print the design out first via your printer (make sure the sticker paper is printed with the back facing upwards) and then you can place it on your Cricut mat as shown on the design space screen. Feed it into your Cricut and choose 'sticker paper' as your material, and then you're ready to press the all important cut button.

Once they're done, peel the back off each one and stick on your chosen favour or decor item. And it's as simple as that. Using a Cricut saves you so much time!

Step Four (For those using scissors):

Print your design onto your sticker paper. Remember to place the sticker paper in the printing tray with the back facing upwards!

And then you can cut around each design with scissors, and peel off the backing in order to stick them on your favours. If the shape you used is much more complex, then you could use a scoring knife and cutting board, but of course, always use them with caution.

Last step if you also want to make Maple Syrup favors:

All you need to do now is add a sticker and decant your maple syrup using the small funnel into each bottle. And hey presto, some quick, easy and cheap wedding favours that all of your guests will love!

I have just gone with a monochrome design, but you can make more complex stickers, or use coloured sticker paper if that suits your theme.
